High Voltage Resistor for Reliable Performance from China

High Voltage Resistor refers to a resistor component manufactured using thick film technology, capable of withstanding voltages of several thousand volts or even hundreds of kilovolts. It usually uses high-purity alumina ceramic as the substrate, prints resistor paste (containing metal oxides such as ruthenium, silver, and palladium) on the surface, undergoes high-temperature sintering to form the resistor layer, and then covers a glass glaze or organic silicon protective layer. The two ends are metal electrodes. Due to the uniform resistor layer and the absence of winding structure of thick film resistors, they have extremely low inductance and capacitance, making them suitable for high-voltage, high-frequency, and pulse applications. Maximum operating voltage (e.g. 10kV, 20kV, 50kV); Voltage withstand capability (typically 1.5 times or more of the operating voltage); Resistance range (100Ω to 100GΩ); Accuracy (±1% to ±10%); Temperature coefficient (as low as ±50ppm/℃); Rated power (0.5W to 500W, limited by surface creepage and heat dissipation); Voltage coefficient (VCR, the rate of resistance change with voltage, high-voltage thick-film resistors require VCR < ±1%). To prevent high-voltage breakdown, multiple cutting slots are usually designed on the surface of High Voltage Resistor to increase the creepage distance, or a dome skirt structure is added at both ends of the resistor (similar to high-voltage insulators). Packaging forms include axial leads (similar to cylindrical) or bolt-fixed type (for high power).


Application fields

Voltage divider feedback networks of high-voltage power supplies (such as X-ray machines, electrostatic spraying, particle accelerators); high-voltage probes for oscilloscopes; discharge resistors of high-voltage capacitors; pulse absorption in devices like mosquito repellents and gas igniters; high-voltage testing instruments.

Selection focus: 

1) The maximum operating voltage must be greater than the peak voltage in the circuit (considering transient overvoltage);

2) ESD distance: Calculated based on pollution level and operating voltage, typically 1-2mm of ESD distance is required for every 1kV;

3) Pulse tolerance: High-voltage circuits often encounter sharp pulses, so the rated single pulse energy of the resistor must be confirmed;

4) Humidity influence: Surface moisture under high voltage is prone to cause breakdown, so it is necessary to apply anti-humidity paint or select sealed packaging.
